Freelance Rate survey – deadline approaching

Hey folks. The deadline is approaching for the Radio Guild's freelancer survey. They are not associated with Freelance Cafe or the Freelance Media Workers Guild, but I know the folks organizing it and they are really great people. This is an opportunity to help secure better wages for freelancers of all stripes. You can access the survey here:

Northcoast Environmental Center journal seeks writers (volunteer)

Hey folks. A new North coast environmental journal is looking for volunteer writers. I know, I know – volunteer – but this is a good opportunity for students or other newbies who are looking for clips. I know the editor and she's a total pro, so this is a great chance to get edited by a professional team and get clips for your portfolio. That is worth something if you're just getting started. Contact amy@yournec.org for more information.

++++++++++++++++++++++

The Northcoast Environmental Center publishes a journal focusing on forestry policy and environmental news.  Volunteer writers are needed for assignments, and pitches are welcome.  This is a great opportunity for law students, environmental science students, or journalism students to see their name in print.  Stories are read by an educated community, so you won't have to shy away from the details.  You will make great contact within the environmental community, and learn about the biggest news items in the forestry field.  Stories must be related to the Northcoast area, although this isn't hard given the breadth of forestry impacts in this area, and the local nexus of state-wide and national policy endeavors.
If you are interested in writing a 300, 500, 800 or 1200 word story, please send a short pitch or request for an assignment to the editor. Include links to published work or an attached writing sample.  Final stories should also include photos.

a note about the last FC West gathering

See the following note from FC West coordinator Jen Ward. I'll take it as a good sign that there were enough people out to have two complete groups at Luka's!
Best,
Mia

+++++++++++++++++++++++

I’d like to offer an apology for any confusion connected with the different Freelance Café groups that met on Thursday. I didn’t receive a text sent to me by a group chilling in the back by the pool tables. Consequently, there were two Café groups at Luka’s Thursday night. From what I know, both groups had a blast, I’m just sorry we could not have hung out as one big group. In any case, a good time was had by all. We’ve got our eye on San Francisco for next month’s gathering. Maybe we’ll find a smaller spot, what do you say?

Best,

Jen Ward

Call for proposal for San Francisco cell phone tour

This one looks good, Bay Area audio folks. Contact info below.
-mia

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

The San Francisco Arts Commission would like to develop an audio tour of the public art that
will be located in San Francisco International Airport’s new Terminal 2, which is scheduled to
open next spring. The content will be delivered through a cell phone and will also be repurposed

for an iApp that is currently being developed by the airport. The Arts Commission will retain full
copyright of the audio content and will be free to repurpose the content on an ongoing basis and
through multiple platforms.

Scope of work:
• The tour will cover 17 new and existing artworks (17 stops)
• The tour may also include supplemental layers of content that enhance several of the
stops, or content about the individual works of art.

• The tour will include actualities from interviews with the five living artists who will be
installing new works in the terminal. This will require setting up and recording the audio
remotely as several of the artists live outside of the Bay Area. This project scope does

not include traveling expenses. These recordings should be recorded at a studio or via
tape synch (with a technician located in the artist’s area).
• For the older artworks, archival audio or interviews with curators or other art experts

might be included in the stops.
• The tour should have one unifying narrator or neutral voice. Ideally, this would be a
professional actor.
• The tour should include some background/transition music, but limited since the audio

will be delivered on a cell phone.
• This project will require developing a script and interview questions from materials
provided by the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Public Art Program as well as other
outside sources.

• The Arts Commission will also need transcripts of the final audio content for ADA
purposes

Interested parties should contact Kate Patterson at 415-252-4638 or via email, kate.

REMINDER – FC West gathering Thursday, Sept 30, 6:30pm

Message below from our intrepid west coast leader, Jen Ward. Hope you can all make it out on Sept. 30. Should be a great gathering! RSVP to jennifer.wrd@gmail.com or on Facebook.
Best,
Mia

+++++++++++++++++++++

Based on the RSVPs, this month’s social gathering at Luka’s on Sept. 30 is shaping up to be a nice gathering of media organizations, freelancers, and others interested in our Café crew.

The social gathering is being sponsored by Oakland Local and is a great opportunity to mingle, network, and unwind. I’m sure plenty of us will have lots to talk about and I look forward to finding out what different Bay Area organizations are doing.

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

Best,
Jen Ward
Freelance Cafe

Freelance Rate survey, deadline Oct 1

Hey folks. Some radio freelancer colleagues are banding together to figure out what a "fair wage" is for freelance audio work. Help them out by taking the survey below.
Thx!
Mia

+++++++++++++++++++++

I am working with a group of New York City producers (our group is under the working title of 'Radio Guild')  to explore the status of independent audio/radio work, in terms of compensation. Our ultimate goal is to set standards that reflect the amount of work that's actually done and get stations, outlets and shows to agree. To that end, our first step is to put out a survey to determine how much time independents put into their work, and what they're currently getting paid for that time. This will allow us to come up with a realistic schedule for rates that can uniformly be used when approaching stations and PRX (while we're fans of PRX and love to get our work aired, selling stories for $3 undercuts independent's ability to make a living).

You can access the survey at the following link:
