Gay Talese Named Special Guest at
2016 BU Power of Narrative Conference

Legendary journalist and author Gay Talese will headline the 2016 Power of Narrative Conference on April 1-3 at Boston University, conference organizers announced today.

The gathering of narrative storytellers, with more than 500 attendees expected from around the world, will be among the most ambitious Power of Narrative events since the annual conference was founded nearly two decades ago.

"We're delighted to welcome Gay Talese back to the College of Communication's Power of Narrative Conference and to honor him for his unmatched contributions to this craft," said Tom Fiedler, dean of the BU College of Communication. "No journalist more ably demonstrates the 'Power of Narrative' in telling true stories, and none shares more generously the techniques that will enable others to succeed.  It's our great fortune to honor Gay as the 2016 Thomas R. Schoenenberger Visiting Writer."

In addition to Talese, among the more than 40 confirmed speakers are acclaimed authors Mary Roach, Hampton Sides, Sam Freedman and Meera Subramanian, and award-winning Boston Globe editor Brian McGrory. The Globe has come aboard as conference's "Presenting Sponsor," and will host a cocktail party for all attendees.

"The Moth" is bringing its unique brand of audio storytelling to the Friday night kickoff, and The New York Times is sending journalists Fernanda Santos, Sarah Maslin Nir and Ben Solomon, among others.

Keynote and breakout sessions will range across all platforms of narrative, in keeping with the conference's pledge to keep nonfiction storytellers "savvy, skilled and solvent in journalism's wired era." Registration for the conference opened Dec. 1, and discounted early bird registration runs through Jan. 22. Special rates are also available for college and graduate students and Boston University alumni.

Registration and other information can be found at bu.edu/com/narrative/.

Talese is a bestselling author who has written 11 books. He was a tenacious reporter for the New York Times from 1956 to 1965, and since then he has written for the Times, Esquire, The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, and other national publications.

His groundbreaking article "Frank Sinatra Has a Cold" was named the "best story Esquire ever published." He was one of the first journalists to apply fiction techniques to journalism, and was credited by Tom Wolfe with the creation of the innovative form of nonfiction writing called "The New Journalism."

His most recent book, A Writer's Life, was published by Knopf in 2006 and reissued in trade paperback by The Random House Publishing Group in July 2007. A collection of his sportswriting, The Silent Season of a Hero, was published by Walker & Company in September 2010.
Power of Narrative
The Power of Narrative Conference has convened in several places and under several names, since its founding at Boston University in 1998. The Power of Narrative's mission remains constant as storytelling journalism goes digital: helping narrative journalists strengthen their craft, following the highest ethical practices and imparting the down-to-earth humanity that characterizes the genre. Join us at the Power of Narrative Conference at Boston University College of Communication from April 1-3, 2016.

Boston University College of Communication

quick-turnaround photog gig in Chicago

CA-based producer seeks a photographic storyteller in Chicago for a quick-turnaround gig late this week/early next. Details below! -Mia
+++++++++++++++++++

Looking for a good storyteller in Chicago who has a journalism skill-set
that includes solid photography. This person will visit a Chicago start-up
for 1-2 hours and take some quick-turnaround photos, following the
guidelines I provide.

Ideally, you'll be able to collaborate with me by following a shot-list to
help capture the story of the people behind this start-up, while also
keeping an eye out for anything exciting that might be happening.

The shoot can take place anytime between Friday morning (Nov 14th) and
Monday afternoon (Nov 17th). We'll coordinate a mutually agreeable time
for everyone involved.

What I'm not looking for is a wedding photographer, an Instagram hobbyist,
or a professional portrait photographer. Rather, this role is for a
journalist or marketer with a good eye for image composition and a strong
sense of story.

This pays hourly (not per image) — think tape-sync, but with images
instead of audio. The rate is $50 per hour, with a minimum of $100.

Please contact Stacy at stacyb@audioluxe.org.  Thank you!

Reporters & Producers,

About Our Show
The Pulse is a weekly exploration of the worlds of health, science, and innovation. Our goal is take our audience on a journey, to humanize the inhuman, to celebrate with skepticism, to put people first, to surprise, to answer questions people didn’t even know they had, to empower them to take control of their health, and certainly to keep it weird. We’ve covered everything from the role of precision medicine in bridging the racial divide to the oddly fascinating history of the dimmer switch. We’ve documented the challenges of interstellar sex, and we’ve sat at an old grand piano in a hospital lobby as a young doctor played us a tune in her down time. We’re hungry for sound-rich stories that take us beyond headlines and into the heart of a story…sometimes literally.

show: one hour weekly

segments: up to 10 minutes

compensation: $350-900 commensurate with length and depth of reporting and reporter/producer experience

pitch: By email. Please put PITCH in the subject line, be as succinct as possible about the voices and sound of your proposed piece and please listen to the show in order to understand our tone and previous pieces. Please also include a couple of links to your past work.

New online mag focused on global development and culture seeks pitches

New online magazine, Broken Toilets, wants your pitches. Details below. -Mia
++++++++++++++++

Broken Toilets is an online magazine that presents independently reported stories and features about global development and culture in a frank, critical, and engaging way. Broken Toilets examines areas such as humanitarian aid, conflict and emergencies, migration, social justice, political change, public health, infrastructure, finance, climate change, and the environment through stories that draw out the implications for people and communities.

We’re interested in how change happens – change that results from initiatives executing global goals, organizations working through philanthropy and social enterprise, and the local practices of citizens, civil society and community groups. Broken Toilets content is driven by topic rather than by geography, rejecting outdated categories in order to cultivate a view that aims to be truly global.

Each month, the magazine publishes thematic issues presenting views from multiple contexts and contributors. Stories are told through a variety of genres, including short and long form journalism, multimedia, and cultural narrative. Our blog runs simultaneously engaging readers with additional curated as well as original content in the form of news stories, commentary, interviews, dispatches, videos, and images.
We plan to launch in February 2016 and have announced our call for pitches for the first few issues. Subscribe to this free magazine and/or pitch us a story!
