Calderwood Grant Challenge Supports Writers of Long-Form Journalism

MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire launches Art of Journalism Initiative dedicated to narrative reporting.

A new initiative at The MacDowell Colony, the nation’s first artist residency program, will double the number of fellowships for writers engaged in deep reporting and complex, long-form journalism. By giving journalists studio space and uninterrupted time in a stimulating and creative artistic community, MacDowell’s Art of Journalism Initiative will invest $4.5 million in helping today’s groundbreaking writers develop their best work. In an era of fast news and free access, writers often struggle to support themselves while preparing stories that can take months, and sometimes years, to complete.

The Calderwood Charitable Foundation has committed a lead gift of $1.5 million, including a $1 million challenge grant, which –  when matched by $1 million in new funding over the next three years – will endow 10 new journalism fellowships to be awarded by a competitive application process. Stanford Calderwood, a newspaperman in his youth who later went on to establish an investment firm, was a lover of nonfiction and was a member of MacDowell’s Board of Directors.

Overall, the Art of Journalism Initiative will raise a total of $4.5 million in support of creative nonfiction. This national program was begun when MacDowell’s Board of Directors designated three nonfiction fellowships in honor of long-time MacDowell Board Member Anne Cox Chambers, primary owner of media conglomerate Cox Enterprises that grew from the family owned newspaper business.By-Stuart-Sia-International-Medical-Corps-3(sheri-large).jpg

In addition, the Calderwood Fund for Project Grants to Journalism Fellows, supported by a grant of $500,000, will provide participating writers with grants of up to $2,500 based on financial need to fund travel, research, and other project-based work before or after the residency. These grants are designed to help the growing number of independent journalists and mitigate the impact of diminishing budgets for long-form journalism at media and publishing outlets.

“We believe that long-form journalism can and will survive in the new publishing era. With a global audience and journalism schools burgeoning with talented writers, long-form is undergoing a renaissance,” says MacDowell’s Executive Director Cheryl Young. “However, the reality is that this generation will have difficulty finding full-time employment.”

Help support this initiative by clicking here.

“Until new commercial models are in place, residencies can help. We don’t want to lose what the best journalists can teach us about the world,” Young adds. “Well-written stories can inform how we view politics, new scientific discoveries, social justice, and the environment. We hope this new support for journalists will help keep that profound exploration going and make the world a better place.”

The MacDowell Colony has supported some of the finest voices in non-fiction for decades, from the essays of James Baldwin to Frances Fitzgerald’s investigations into the Vietnam War. More recently, journalists such as Sheri Fink, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Nicholas Dawidoff, William Finnegan, and Adrian Nicole LeBlanc have worked at the Colony early in their careers. With the Art of Journalism Initiative, The MacDowell Colony plans to reach deeper into the nonfiction  community by forming relationships with magazines, publishers, media outlets, and journalism schools.

Journalists are encouraged to apply for fellowships at www.macdowellcolony.org/apply.html  or by writing admissions@macdowellcolony.org.

upcoming grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism, next deadline Sept 21

Upcoming deadlines for the Fund for Investigative Journalism. Next one, Sept 21. Go for it!! -Mia
+++++++++++++++
The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) awards reporting grants three to four times each year for investigative stories and books, and is currently accepting applications for its upcoming deadline, Monday September 21, 2015 (5pm EDT).

FIJ’s Board of Directors seeks proposals for stories that break new ground and expose wrongdoing – such as corruption, malfeasance, or misuse of power in the United States and overseas. FIJ encourages proposals written for ethnic media in the United States.

The typical grant is $5,000 and covers out-of-pocket expenses such as travel, document collection, and equipment rental. Requests for small stipends are also considered as a part of the overall budget.

For more than 40 years, FIJ has been a resource for independent journalists working as freelancers or for nonprofit media outlets.

Mentoring: In partnership with Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Society of Environmental Journalists, mentors are recruited for successful grantees upon request. Mentors act as sounding boards, working with grantees over the course of their projects.

For detailed application requirements, visit the website: http://fij.org/grant-application/. If you have further questions, contact executive director Sandy Bergo at fundfij@gmail.com or call 202-662-7564.

Following the September 21, 2015 deadline, applications will be accepted for the next deadline, which is February 1, 2016 at 5pm Eastern Time.

As AIR’s network expands (our year-over-year growth increased 73 percent in the first half of 2015), we are working to open the golden age of talent — and its opportunities — to a diverse, inclusive range of media makers.

AIR’s New Voices scholarships (http://airmedia.org/programs/new-voices-scholarships/) are available for those who can contribute fresh craft, diversity or perspective to the network and media.

If you are, or if you know, someone who can help make public media more inclusive, apply or help us spread the word (https://airmedia.wufoo.com/forms/airs-2015-new-voices-scholarship/).

The scholarship brings new talent to industry gatherings — this year, to the Public Radio Program Directors' conference in Pittsburgh (http://www.prpd.org/conference/2015.aspx) — where they will find a peer support network, opportunities to meet industry leaders, and chances to share their interests, concerns and work.

WE SEEK: Creative makers from all corners of the country who are new to public media. You do not have to be an AIR member to apply (https://airmedia.wufoo.com/forms/airs-2015-new-voices-scholarship/).

WE OFFER: New Voices scholars receive up to $1,500 in funding to subsidize the costs of attending the conference. They gain access to the PRPD Conference and additional New Voices only programming in Pittsburgh, as well as access to the New Voices alumni network.

DEADLINE: Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at 5 p.m. PT. Applications that are not completed at 5 p.m. will not be saved and cannot be considered.

CONFERENCE DETAILS: PRPD convenes program directors, reporters, editors, producers and managers for conversation about where public media is and where it can go. Read full conference details at the PRPD website (http://www.prpd.org/conference/2015.aspx).

MORE: Seven years of New Voices alumni include some of the most interesting, sought-after talent rising in public media. They’re working at the network and station levels and as independents, domestic and international.

Please read through the New Voices FAQ (http://airmedia.org/programs/new-voices-scholarships/) in its entirety before completing the application.

Rooted in the earliest experiments with radio, Transmission Art has continued to flourish into the 21st Century with experiments using wireless communications technology over the past 100 years, including the exploration of a variety of mobile-based platforms and lesser-known forms of transmission, such as VLF. The terrain of transmission art is dynamic and fluid, always open to redefinition.

The Trans-X Transmission Art Symposium, part of the Deep Wireless Festival of Radio & Transmission Art, will focus on Transmission Art, with particular interest in contributions that summarize, examine or reframe traditions and histories of transmission art practices, technology, education and pedagogy. Additionally, we are very interested in presentations that go beyond the local contingent to give a sense of how new technologies of international transmission activity might be experienced. Proposed presentations and performances that combine the themes of Transmission Art and “Undo/Redo” are also especially welcome.
