Society of Professional Journalists, Northern California Chapter
2010 Excellence in Journalism Awards

Deadline: Sept. 7, 2010

Know a deserving journalist who soldiers on through cutbacks to get the story, photo or video? Whose dedication to our craft is second to none? Or is that journalist you?

For the past 25 years, the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has selected from among the Bay Area’s best of the best for its acclaimed Excellence in Journalism Awards. This year, in honor of our 25th awards anniversary, we’ve tweaked the format and revamped some of the categories to capture the breadth of our industry and make for a truly compelling awards ceremony. We’ve kept our special “Economy” category and added two more special categories: “Health Care” and “Environment.”

These awards honor the journalists whose work best reflects the SPJ ideals of initiative, integrity, talent and compassion. We also are seeking nominees for six special Board of Directors Awards: Journalist of the Year, Career Achievement, Distinguished Service, Unsung Hero, Meritorious SPJ Service and the Silver Heart. More details can be found in our online and pdf entry forms. For online entries, click here. Or fill out the attached PDF.

Entry deadline: Sept. 7. Best of luck!

intro digital audio storytelling workshop at Wing and Clover next Sunday?

Hi all. Are any of you interested in an intro to digital audio storytelling workshop in Rhinebeck next weekend? I'm supposed to teach it but somehow the summer has just slipped away and I haven't had time to promote it. So far only one person has signed up. We can reschedule it for later this fall, but I'd love to gauge general interest in this sort of thing. The class will be held at the fabulous Wing and Clover, 22 East Market Street in Rhinebeck. Let me know if this is something you'd like to do (either next weekend or in the future), and feel free to pass it on to anyone who might be interested – all ages welcome!
Best,
Mia

Oral History: Intro to Digital Audio Storytelling

Stories are best told by the people who live them. In this class you will learn basic digital audio recording and editing to produce public-radio-style features, oral histories, and other sound-rich documentaries. As a class, we will create a short audio feature that you can use as a guide for future personal projects. We will cover interview and recording techniques, tips for telling stories with sound, and basic digital editing and mixing. Recording and editing equipment will be available for your use in class, but we will also discuss how to set up your own digital recording suite at home.

WASHINGTON (August 4, 2010) — The Fund for Investigative Journalism has announced that the deadline for its next round of grant proposals is Wednesday, September 8.

The Fund is particularly interested in proposals from U.S. reporters investigating issues in their states and local communities, and working on investigative stories for ethnic media. The program for local, regional, and ethnic media is funded by a $100,000 grant from Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.

FIJ accepts applications through its newly redesigned website, www.fij.org.

Questions about the application process can be sent to Fund executive director Sandy Bergo, fundfij@gmail.com

For more than forty years, the Fund for Investigative Journalism has supported work by reporters who do not have the resources to do their investigations, with grants ranging from $500 to $10,000. The Fund’s distinguished board not only decides which applicants to help, but also provides guidance in pursuing stories and placing them with media outlets. In a new partnership with Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Fund also matches grant recipients with veteran journalists who serve as mentors, at a recipient’s request.

The Fund depends on donations from foundations and individuals. Donations can be made online or by mail to The Fund for Investigative Journalism, 910 17th Street NW – 7th floor, Washington DC 20006.

Another opportunity at City Visions Radio, KALW. This is a volunteer gig but a good opportunity to get some experience and a foot in the door at KALW; they do a lot of great work. This from their senior producer:

In nearly all cases, producing with us has given a nice push to producers to further their careers and find new work opportunities.  I feel strongly that producing for us provides a great opportunity to demonstrate and fine tune skills and deepen resumes.

free webinar – 10 Steps to a Tech-Savvy You, Aug 5, 2pm ET

I haven't done one of these, but it's free, and seems like a good opportunity to brush up on some tech knowledge. Check it out!
-mia

+++++++++++++++++++++

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you know that we're hosting a free webinar for stay-at-home entrepreneurs, displaced journalists, seasoned academics, C-level corporate managers, retirees and others. It's called "10 Steps to a Tech-Savvy You."  Think of it as a digital media makeover.  It's happening August 5 at 2pm ET.

This webinar will outline the 10 steps — and critical websites, social networks and gear — to help you become more tech savvy. We're also offering a primer on how to manage information overload.  As always, attendees will receive notes, worksheets and a list of recommended tools.

The 10 steps we're going to feature, as well as all of the resources, are essential to survive in our increasingly digital world. The webinar is produced by our training website Knowledgewebb (http://www.knowledgewebb.net), which has been featured on MSNBC, FOX and NPR as well as in Entrepreneur Magazine as the go-to website to learn digital skills. We hold a few free webinars a year with more than 500 participants — and we always run out of space because our sessions are so popular. More details, along with registration, are here:http://bit.ly/dd6Na6.

Cheers,
Amy
