AIR will again offer $20,000 in New Voices scholarships to support independent producers and new station-based programmers attending the PRPD Programming Conference in Baltimore, MD September 20-23, 2011.  AIR offers these scholarships contingent on an anticipated signed agreement with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Applicants are invited to submit a brief statement outlining one big idea for how independent producers and stations can work together to blend broadcast and digital media tools to expand the tentacles of public radio stations into the local community. A panel will be convened to review applications and final decisions announced by August 19. For you Bay Area folks – get yourself a prize! Good luck.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 2011

Contact: Liz Enochs, president, (415) 323-0220

26th ANNUAL EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM AWARDS

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Know a deserving journalist who soldiers on through cutbacks to tell the truth? Get the story, photo or video? Whose dedication to our craft is second to none? Or is that journalist you? For the past 26 years, the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has selected from among the Bay Area's best of the best for its acclaimed Excellence in Journalism Awards. These awards honor the journalists whose work best reflects the SPJ ideals of initiative, integrity, talent and compassion.

This year marks two significant changes to the awards: categories and entries. The board voted to realign the categories to reflect changes in journalism: Print/Text, Radio/Audio, TV/Video and Multimedia. Some categories will also be subdivided into daily and non-daily. The six special Board of Directors Awards will remain the same: Journalist of the Year, Career Achievement, Distinguished Service, Unsung Hero, Meritorious SPJ Service and the Silver Heart.

The change to an online-only format, a first for this chapter, is one that we hope will make the contest process easier and faster. We will no longer accept mailed entries. The contest entry site will feature a one-stop shop for all your contest needs, including a short video with detailed, step-by-step instructions. All entrants need to do is create an account, and the site will walk you through the rest. As with all product launches, however, we anticipate a few kinks along the way. We thank you in advance for your patience as we make this important transition and would appreciate your feedback. The site — www.awards.spjnorcal.org — is set to go live by Aug. 6.

Details and rules below. Deadline Aug. 19. Best of luck!

Sourcefabric – redesigning the future of journalism

Hey folks. I was recently contacted by an interesting organization in Europe. They have a contest coming up that some of y'all might be interested in. (Prize is a trip to Prague!) Details and a message from their communications guy below.

-Mia

++++++++++++++++++++++

We're a non-profit organisation supporting independent media through a variety of things from running contests challenging people to redesign news on the web (http://contest.sourcefabric.org), to building great broadcast networks in interesting places (http://www.wadr.org based in Dakar, using SoundCloud, satellite technology and open source software), to reporting on undercovered stories (http://sourcefabric.org/en/community/blog/670). We have our own CMS for journalists, and we're currently developing an open source newsroom management tool.

But perhaps it's the contest that might interest people the most. More details are below – any help you could give us on spreading the word about what we do would be great.

Many thanks, Adam

This American Life is produced by Chicago Public Media (WBEZ) and is heard on over 500 public radio stations in the U.S. by 1.7 million listeners each week. Most weeks it's also the most popular podcast in the country, with another 650,000 people downloading. It's heard each week in Canada on the CBC and in Australia on the ABC. The show has won every major American award for broadcasting and journalistic excellence, but from the start, it was designed as an entertainment, a documentary show for people who hate documentaries. Finding, commissioning, editing, directing, mixing and producing segments for a weekly show. These include stories with field reporting and sound, host interviews and authors reading original fiction and non-fiction.

Designing entire programs, in collaboration with the Senior Producer.

Demonstrated experience with narrative journalism is essential: creating stories that unfold with a plot and emotion and humor and fully relatable characters. Five years’ experience reporting or producing in radio, preferably for a nationally distributed show.

Film or TV documentary experience may substitute for radio experience, if it's crafting stories similar to the style of our program.
Digital audio editing and mixing skills are essential.
College Graduate or equivalent training and experience.
Please note: We will only consider candidates who have experience doing narrative journalism like the stories on our show.

Salary consummate with experience. This position is based in New York City. Due to the production schedule of the show, we will be contacting candidates for interviews in late August and early September. Please include links to your work in your cover letter.
