Are you the New Voice we're looking for?

Applications are now open for the next class of producers, journalists, and storymakers to join AIR at the 2018 Third Coast Conference in Chicago, October 4-6, 2018.

Every year, New Voices scholars bring diverse ideas, insights, and experiences from across America to challenge how public media is conceptualized, produced, and delivered. AIR’s commitment to cultivating vibrant talent in the industry has led to a far-reaching—and still growing—network of 175 New Voices alumni. Now's your time to join them.

We seek: Daring makers from all corners of the country, especially individuals from underrepresented communities and groups.

If chosen, you receive: A travel stipend up to $1,500 to attend the 2018 Third Coast Conference, a complimentary one-year AIR membership, and special opportunities and support at the conference.

Apply now, or send this message along to rising story-makers on a mission to change the face of public media.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, May 31, 2018, at midnight PT.

Please note: You do not have to be an AIR producer to apply.

Applications must be completed by midnight PT. Submissions in progress at that time will not be saved and cannot be considered. You may read through the New Voices FAQ here before completing the application.

5 WK PODCASTING CLASS IN SAN FRANCISCO IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY

Shaina Shealy is a producer of Snap Judgment as well as a radio journalist whose stories have been distributed by national news outlets including the PRI The World, NPR.org and the New York Times online. Also, because of our radio storytelling classes, 10 of our students have sold stories to the radio from this class–9 on Unfictional, 1 on All Things Considered. Our most recent student to get on air is Caitlin Biljan with a moving tale about her obsessive search for a high school self-defense tape that contained some strange advice. Listen to it HERE. https://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/unfictional/running-away

In this class, Shaina teaches you the ins and outs of how top-tier podcasts are developed, researched, written, and produced. You'll learn interviewing methods, audio editing basics, use of archival audio, miking and field recording techniques. By the end of the class, you'll have a solid outline of your pilot episode and a recording of your show teaser.

Enter the ‘Radio Is Yours’ Audio Contest, deadline Jan 15

Hello freelancers! It's been awhile… And it's with mixed feelings I announce that I've taken a regular full time job after 10 YEARS of freelancing. I'm very excited about this new venture (as Managing Producer of Panoply's original content – check out THIS and THIS to get a sense of the fun stuff I'll get to work on) but I admit I'm having a bit of an identity crisis after championing the freelance lifestyle for so long.

In any case, I plan to keep FC going as much as I can, and am looking for someone to take over the posting if you or someone you know might be interested. And if you have an opportunity to share, you can always post it to the FB page or tweet us @freelancecafe
For now, check out the opportunity below, and thanks for the long-time support of FC!
Best,
Mia
