Hyphen Public Interest Journalism Fellowship

The Hyphen Public Interest Journalism Fellowship will foster high-impact stories about Asian Americans with a focus on coverage of the pressing social issues of the day, such as immigration or the environment.

Fellows who are selected will funded up to $3,500 each. Projects can be in any medium, and the fellowship is open to journalists in all media. Fellows will be selected based on the strength of the proposal and likelihood for successful reporting and completion. Hyphen publishes a print magazine, website and blog.

The fellowship will fill a need for ambitious journalism covering Asian American communities and issues. Fellows will be expected to report and produce stories that illuminate some aspect of the Asian American experience. Fellows will be supervised by Hyphen’s editorial team.

Timeline: Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on August 1, 2011 (electronic application only). Email the application to: fellowship@hyphenmagazine.com.

Fellows will be announced August 31, 2011.

Fellows are expected to complete the first draft of the project by January 2012.

Eligibility: Journalists who have at least three years of experience in print, video, audio or electronic journalism (writing, reporting, editing, producing) and demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality in-depth journalistic work. Applicants should have prior experience and a clear passion for covering Asian American communities and issues, or other marginalized communities and communities of color. Fellows must be eligible to work in the United States, though they do not need to be based in the United States. The candidate must represent and warrant that she or he be able to work in the United States or otherwise be able to receive the fellowship and perform the services required by the fellowship without violating applicable laws and regulations. Nothing stated herein shall obligate Hyphen magazine to awarding the fellowship or otherwise selecting a recipient for the fellowship.

Hyphen’s magazine has a readership of 10,000 as well as an established and growing online presence with an average of 45,000 unique monthly visitors to its website, hyphenmagazine.com, and blog, hyphenmagazine.com/blog. The stories produced will be publicized via our magazine, website and social media.

How to Apply

Please include a fellowship proposal, budget, work samples and resume.

Fellowship Proposal: A statement not to exceed 2,000 words that includes a detailed description of the proposed project. Discuss the significance and timeliness of the topic and how it affects the Asian American community.

Please ensure that your project proposal responds to the following questions/points

  1. An overview of the project you propose.
  2. What is new, innovative, useful, counterintuitive or controversial about the topic addressed by your project?

  3. What are the implications of the project both in the short and long term for Asian Americans and others?
  4. Why are you proposing the project? How did you happen upon the topic?
  5. Why are you the best person to do this project and story?

Budget: Include a one-page estimated project budget describing how the funds will be used to support the project (research, materials, travel if necessary).

Work Samples: Please submit an electronic copy of three work samples that include the name of the publication or outlet and the date it was published.

Resume: Please include a list of representative publications and outlets, membership in professional organizations, major journalism prizes and/or awards and year awarded. Include at least one professional reference.
