free online course on Social Media for Journos from the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is offering a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on Social Media for Journalists, Feb 3-March 9. Some info below. More HERE.


Reporters and editors have struggled with how to deal with the phenomenon of social networks. Now they have a chance to learn from a team of experts who will teach the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas’ next Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “Social Media for Journalists: The Basics.” Click here to register now.
This five-week online course in English will start on Feb. 3 and conclude on Mar. 9. The MOOC will be offered for free and, while it was designed with journalists and media practitioners in mind, anyone in the world with access to the Internet is invited to participate.

Following the success last year of its five-instructor massive course “Data-Driven Journalism: The Basics,” the Knight Center will use the same model in this new course. It will give students the opportunity to learn from the multiple perspectives of some of the top social media experts in American journalism.

“We are very excited with this new massive online course. Even before our formal announcement today, about 1,000 people from 92 countries have already registered as the news about the course spread through social media,” said Professor Rosental Alves, director and founder of the Knight Center.
“It’s great to see that we have already started forming, even before the announcement, a global community of people interested in social media and journalism. This is going to be a very useful, practical course not only for journalists, but anyone who wants to learn more about social networks,”  Alves said.
The course will be divided into five weekly modules, each one with a different instructor and a different topic. All the instructors have experience with social media strategies in American news organizations. The instructors are:

Unconference on online media, May 2, 1-6pm, SF

RemakeCamp is an unconference about online media. We welcome editors, journalists, engineers, designers and managers of online media as well as service providers for them.

Topics we cover:

* Content creation. Crowdsourcing, citizen journalism, freelance journalism, content farming, user contributed content, expert contributed content, collaborative publishing, the future of investigative journalism. * The role of editor. Curation, link journalism, news filtering, tastemaking and trendsetting, social news filtering, freelance and crowdsouring management, reputation systems for contributors, community management. * Tools. Apps and plugins for publishers, tools for reporters and writers, analytics for online media. * User experience. Optimizing content consumption for mobile devices, personalized news, attention profiles, reader interfaces, interactive articles, data visualization, social media integration. * Business. Monetization models, attracting traffic, partner programs, content exchange, creating job boards and marketplaces, paid content and paywalls.

We organize RemakeCamp to achieve several goals: (1) give everyone a good overview of what’s going on in the space of online media and evolution of journalism; (2) extract and share the knowledge, learned lessons, best practices and open challenges from people’s heads; (3) connect tech, editorial, and journalism communities.

We are looking for speakers (5, 10 or 20 minutes talks). Distant speakers (skype video call) are also accepted. Email Yury (yury@yury.name ) if you want to present.

During RemakeCamp we organize collaborative publishing experiment. Using tools like Etherpad, PBWorks and Google Wave we will create in real time a document representing our knowledge, future forecast and important challenges of media innovation.

Exploits in New Media and Emerging Technologies – Online Class

Instructor: Katina Parker School: Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University Dates: ** April 13 – May 18, 2010 Location: Online Class – you can access it from anywhere in the world!

*We meet 5 Tuesdays with one break in between so that students can work on their projects. The class meets for 15 hours total. 6-9pm.

Course Description: How do you utilize Twitter, Facebook, Google Ads, Facebook Ads to promote a new site, event, film project, on-line community or movement?

This class offers step-by-step guidance on launching a social media project from scratch. You’ll learn everything from securing a domain name and using freeware to build your site to shooting and uploading web video; from choosing the right viral video distributor to creating a web advertising campaign to generate revenue. Students will create a sample social media campaign for a video or social media concept they’ve created (whether made previously or shot specifically for use in this class).

Katina Parker Bio Prior to founding the nonprofit New Orleans: A Labor of Love, Katina Parker worked as a creative director and as a media strategist for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). She received an M.F.A. in film production from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Speech Communications from Wake Forest University. Parker has employed her talents as a filmmaker, photographer, and graphic/web designer for such clients as Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Saul Williams. She is currently working as a social media consultant for the Association of Independents in Radio and several other progressive public media projects.
