I attended this tonight and am pleased to report this was a useful experience. It seems perfect if you have work-in-progress or finished work and want critiques; it was like a session of show-your-(multimedia) work followed by constructive criticism on how to make it better or achieve the goal you want. There were good insights and commentary. Also some discussion about gear and tools, which was useful.

Thank you for posting this announcement Mia. It means so much to have a resource like this since we are fully volunteer-driven and operate without a budget.

We've thought about pursuing funding; however, much of the charm and character of the show is derived from it being run by volunteers. We've been on air for 19 years this way. It's a harder sell to recruit producers when the economy isn't doing so well and positions and salaries in the field are shrinking. But we're passionate about what we do, and it shows in our programming. Working for City Visions provides a unique and rewarding experience.

Thanks again for providing this wonderful resource,

comment from Lotus Yee Fong:

My experience with Unity and all minority associations is that large corporations are willing to sponsor because of the diversity and civil rights movements of the past creating the economic relationships of outreach and sponsorship. If you go to any minority organization's conference, like NAACP, La Raza, Organization of Chinese Americans, etc. there are always sponsors and tables for Coca Cola, State Farm Insurance, AT&T, etc. That's how minorities get their first jobs, etc. You could say that corporations assimilate and co-opt minorities into the mainstream, if you want to be cynical.

Hi Mia,
Thanks for the nice write-up for my journalism class, which I just saw on the Freelance Cafe site. By coincidence, I had just attended the CPA workshop given by Jason Stallcup, so I had a little intro to the Freelance Cafe. I'd love to get to know your members. I'm really excited about teaching this class, which is for people interested in covering electronic media as well as biotech. I designed it to give journalists an edge in a number of skills that can help them get jobs and better pay: 1) the basics of business journalism 2) looking for technology angles in all their stories 3) developing a constant stream of story ideas so they can blog or cover a beat 52 weeks a year, and 4) building a "Beat Toolkit'' that will help them work efficiently. The class starts Jan 26 in downtown San Francisco. People should sign up soon if they're interested. E-mail me, Mia... we have a lot of things in common! -- Bernadette

Good morning,

Hope all is well. I'm following up on our email a week or so ago regarding taking a leadership role with the Cafe. I'm wondering where you currently see things with the group and what you'd like to see come about in the new year? Also, what's the background with respect to number of folks involved and who's actively involved.

Best,

Jen Ward

Uggh. That sux. But, cold weather may crimp my initial training. It's going to be ass cold (-14 degrees low for example) in the desert the four days I'm there. I'd like to run, but I don't have cold training gear. Add to the fact that Justin's mother kicks ass in the kitchen (including pies!) and I'm starting to get nervous. I'm just glad I'm a member of Club One again, so I can work off any Xmas damage.
