+++++++++++++++++++++

AIR is excited to announce that our popular Sounds Elemental audio intensives are coming to UnionDocs, a Center for Documentary Art in Brooklyn, NY.

UnionDocs is a rising force in the creative media-documentary universe offering weekend screenings and events, workshops, as well as a year-long artist fellowship program called the Collaborative. They have an interdisciplinary focus, incorporating audio, film/video, writing, photography, interactive and other forms. Like AIR, their programs touch hundreds of media-makers each year, and the partnership represents a natural trajectory and an opportunity for their respective constituencies to further cross-pollinate and grow.

The application window is open now and competition for slots can be stiff. AIR accepts only 10 producers for each of our two 2012 sessions: Sounds Elemental: Magnetism, held June 25-29, 2012 and Sounds Elemental: Gravity, held December 17-21, 2012.

>Deadline to apply for the June intensive is May 18.<<

Learn more and find the application here:
http://airmedia.org/PageInfo.php?PageID=562

Producers benefit from intensely individualized attention from sound artists-teachers Brenda Hutchinson, composer and installation artist Michael Schumacher, and UnionDocs’ own, Christopher Allen. New York Times deputy news editor Amy O’Leary leads an afternoon dive into storytelling and audio slideshows, a session that producers have called "enriching" and "inspiring."

These intensives are designed to provide mid to advanced level media producers with a unique opportunity to spend an entire week exploring unconventional approaches to assembling sound. Over the week, there will be a combination of lectures on the history and landscape of contemporary sound art (think John Cage to Brian Eno to Pauline Oliveros), group discussion and critique, and hands-on “lab” time where students will create a short audio piece inspired by the theme of Magnetism or Gravity.

+++Please note: The aim of this intensive is to inspire new ways of thinking about and approaching non-narrative audio craft, with the hope that will open new thinking and approaches for you in your everyday work. Please go here to learn more about the curriculum; we encourage questions in advance to ensure this course is the right match for you.+++

The cost is $700. A non-refundable $350 deposit is required upon acceptance. You do not have to be a member of AIR to apply. AIR members living outside of New York City who are accepted are eligible for a stipend (up to $150) to help underwrite the cost of the intensive and travel to NYC.

++Full attendance is mandatory. If you are unable to attend each day of the intensive, please do not apply. Class meets from 10AM – 6PM, Monday through Friday.++

Journalism Today Requires That Reporters Have The Flexibility To Tell Stories Across Multiple Platforms

Getting stories to the world demands having the ability to use emerging digital media in an increasingly complex information ecosystem.

The KDMC Multimedia Storytelling Institute is a unique opportunity to learn critical digital skills from industry leaders at the world's premier center for applied digital communications.

Our two-week, June 18-29, 2012, intensive Multimedia Storytelling Institute will help you develop transformative skills to deliver rich multi-platform content for sustainable journalism.

What You Will Learn

Strategies for multimedia story planning, production and delivery using mobile, tablet, and desktop platforms,

Hands-on field reporting to learn professional video, photo and mobile techniques,

Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X for editing visual content,

Data storytelling with interactive databases, visualizations and maps,

Social Media for reporting, content distribution and community engagement,

Each participant takes home an iPad with the complete training curriculum.

What Journalists Are Saying About KDMC

"It was that real-world component that really set it apart. I have many concepts I can bring directly back to the newsroom."- Marisa Kwiatkowski, Digital Storytelling 2012

"This was an incredible experience. The stuff we learned is all very practical, and I know I can put it all into use immediately in my newsroom (and use it to train others)."-Jennifer Peebles, Multimedia Training 2011

"I have used the audio editing, soundslides and video skills frequently over the past several months, especially during my time covering the Iran elections in June. I also use a lot of the overall 'big picture' multimedia skills nearly every second that I work. I really feel that the KDMC training gave me the edge needed to succeed in this job. Thank you!"- Anna Johnson, Multimedia Workshop 2009

* NEW SHOW: Transom Story Workshop – Class of Fall 2011 *

For seven weeks, students from all over the US (plus Canada and Australia) came to Woods Hole to immerse themselves in radio. They were led by Rob Rosenthal, with help from all of us at Transom, WCAI, and visiting friends–Ira Glass, John Barth, Kelly McEvers, and many others. They were beginners when they arrived, some with no experience at all, but they all left with completed radio pieces good enough for broadcast on our station and nationally.

They lived and ate together. They worked on their stories until dawn. They actually looked different when they left, filled with new energy. They were a wonderful, coherent, lively group of people and we loved having them here on Cape Cod. Audiences are already benefitting from the stories they told. We hope you'll drop by Transom to read about their experiences, listen to some of their work, and ask them questions.

http://transom.org/?p=21825

And, by the way, the application deadline for the Spring Session (April-May 2012) is January 2nd.
http://transom.org/?p=21642

Drop over any time,

Even as crime rates hit record lows in cities across the country, gun homicides, gang violence and dating abuse among young people remain stunningly high. Last year, there were more than 4,000 violent incidents in Philadelphia's schools, the majority of them involving students not yet in high school.

Youth violence represents a serious public health problem for all communities. It challenges health professionals and educators, law enforcement and courts, community organizations and government agencies. It also challenges news professionals, whether health and education reporters, cops and court reporters, feature writers, investigative reporters or journalists covering schools, families and neighborhoods. To help journalists and news organizations in the greater Philadelphia area strengthen their coverage of this crucial public health issue, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma based at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is presenting a two-day workshop: “Getting it Right: Reporting on Youth Violence.”

The workshop, supported with funding from the Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation and additional support from the Stoneleigh Foundation, will take place at WHYY in Philadelphia. It will feature a range of local and national mental health and policy experts, award-winning journalists and violence prevention advocates. It will include background briefings as well as specialized reporting skills training to enhance journalists’ capacity to report on youth violence knowledgeably, ethically and effectively.

The workshop is open to working reporters, editors, photographers, producers or bloggers for print, broadcast or online media based in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. Staff, contract and freelance journalists are eligible.
