* NEW SHOW: Transom Story Workshop – Class of Fall 2011 *

For seven weeks, students from all over the US (plus Canada and Australia) came to Woods Hole to immerse themselves in radio. They were led by Rob Rosenthal, with help from all of us at Transom, WCAI, and visiting friends–Ira Glass, John Barth, Kelly McEvers, and many others. They were beginners when they arrived, some with no experience at all, but they all left with completed radio pieces good enough for broadcast on our station and nationally.

They lived and ate together. They worked on their stories until dawn. They actually looked different when they left, filled with new energy. They were a wonderful, coherent, lively group of people and we loved having them here on Cape Cod. Audiences are already benefitting from the stories they told. We hope you'll drop by Transom to read about their experiences, listen to some of their work, and ask them questions.

http://transom.org/?p=21825

And, by the way, the application deadline for the Spring Session (April-May 2012) is January 2nd.
http://transom.org/?p=21642

Drop over any time,

Even as crime rates hit record lows in cities across the country, gun homicides, gang violence and dating abuse among young people remain stunningly high. Last year, there were more than 4,000 violent incidents in Philadelphia's schools, the majority of them involving students not yet in high school.

Youth violence represents a serious public health problem for all communities. It challenges health professionals and educators, law enforcement and courts, community organizations and government agencies. It also challenges news professionals, whether health and education reporters, cops and court reporters, feature writers, investigative reporters or journalists covering schools, families and neighborhoods. To help journalists and news organizations in the greater Philadelphia area strengthen their coverage of this crucial public health issue, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma based at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is presenting a two-day workshop: “Getting it Right: Reporting on Youth Violence.”

The workshop, supported with funding from the Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation and additional support from the Stoneleigh Foundation, will take place at WHYY in Philadelphia. It will feature a range of local and national mental health and policy experts, award-winning journalists and violence prevention advocates. It will include background briefings as well as specialized reporting skills training to enhance journalists’ capacity to report on youth violence knowledgeably, ethically and effectively.

The workshop is open to working reporters, editors, photographers, producers or bloggers for print, broadcast or online media based in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. Staff, contract and freelance journalists are eligible.

Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP)
Presents a Workshop on
Digital Preservation for Videotape
Co-sponsored by The New York Metropolitan Library Council (METRO)

Monday, June 6, 2011
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

If content on analog videotape is to survive for the long term, the tapes must be digitized–moved from the unstable magnetic media on which the content is currently held, into the digital realm where–in theory–they can be preserved indefinitely and migrated forward as files rather than physical objects. Digitization, however, means more than simply selecting a destination file format. It requires a series of decisions that will determine the long-term viability of files created–and thus of the valuable video content. Workshop topics include: basic digital file creation, preservation and access file formats and codecs, software, storage and trusted digital repositories, workflows for digitization, and technical and preservation metadata. In addition, participants will examine case studies of small and large-scale digitization projects in order to understand real-world applications of principles introduced in the workshop.

Workshop location:
METRO Training Center (4th Floor)
57 E. 11th Street
New York, NY 10003
Phone: (212) 228-2320

Workshop fee and registration
$100 IMAP and METRO members
$150 non-members
$50 artists and students
Pre-payment is required with registration. Space is limited.

Davia Nelson of The Kitchen Sisters is conducting another basic recording and interviewing workshop in San Francisco on Thursday, March 31 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The three-hour workshop is for people who want to acquire and hone their skills for an array of projects–radio, online storytelling, oral histories, audio slide shows, family histories, and other multimedia endeavors.

We will cover miking techniques, sound gathering, use of archival audio, how to make interviewees comfortable, how to frame evocative questions that make for compelling storytelling, how to listen (which is harder than it looks), how to use interviews in conjunction with images, field recording techniques, recording equipment and more. The workshop is customized to fit the projects you are working on.

People who attend come from radio, film, multimedia, newspapers, photography, oral history, historical societies, farms, music, writing, libraries, archives, web design and beyond. The groups are always lively and good contacts are made.

The fee is $115. Of course, there will be a snack. The workshops are held in Francis Coppola's historic Zoetrope building in North Beach at 916 Kearny Street (at the corner of Columbus).

If you, or someone you know is interested, email kitchen@kitchensisters.org.

See you there,

Each day’s class will run from 10 am to 5:30 pm,

including 6 hours of class work, plus lunch and breaks.

It will be held at Claire’s studio in Berkeley, California

Class will be limited to 8 students.

The cost of the 2-day seminar is $250.

The Course:

Through lectures, group discussion, Q & A, written handouts, and lots of audio demos, this two-day class will explore the ins and outs of creating a long-form radio documentary. Designed to meet the needs of mid-level producers, this seminar will also be accessible to individuals who have little or no experience in radio production.

Compelling audio documentary incorporates a creative weave of elements including narration, interviews, music, vérité scenes, character portraits, dramatizations, performances, archival tape and ambience beds. Students learn how these elements serve to paint a picture in sound.

Emphasis will be put on the production process. To this end, the class will examine the steps of concept development, research, pre-production, recording techniques, interviewing, writing, organizing tape, scripting, editing and mixing required to create an audio documentary.

Most importantly, we will focus on the art of storytelling. We will discuss dramatic structure, taking the listener through introduction, development and resolution of a story. And we will explore how character development brings the listener to the heart of the story.
