NYT Social Media Internship

The New York Times newsroom is seeking academic interns for its social media desk, which works to engage its readers on social media platforms and innovate new forms of journalism. Tasks will include: sparking conversations on The Times’s social media accounts — including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr and Instagram — as well as assisting on social journalism projects and providing general support. The intern will work closely with the social media editors and developers, as well as reporters, editors and Web producers working on social media-related projects around the newsroom.

Graduate students preferred. Selection will be competitive. The internship is unpaid. Student must receive course credit for the internship and must produce proof of such credit. This position is based in New York; the applicant must commit to being available to work at The Times headquarters at 620 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan for the spring 2012 semester, with schedules subject to restrictions and expectations set by the academic institution.

Candidates should understand the journalistic opportunities presented by social media. While you should have deep familiarity with social technologies, developer skills are not required. Experience using social networks in an editorial context or related work in a newsroom is required. You should also have an excellent eye for detail and great news instincts.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume, including links to social media accounts you maintain personally. Application deadline is Jan. 20, 2011; you must then be available for an interview to be considered further. Decisions will be made by Feb. 1.

Job Description

Bay Area Video Coalition seeks an unpaid intern for our Preservation
Department beginning February 2012. We are a leading vendor in the

field of archival video and audio preservation, and wish to work with
a library, archives, or film production / history student who aspires
to learn about the field of preservation, archival audio and video

formats, and the developing field of born-digital and tape-based
moving image preservation.

Skills acquired include: Archival care and handling of legacy video-
and audiotapes, using a patch bay set-up for video and audio

preservation and transfer, reading a waveform monitor, vector scope,
audio meters, etc. to ensure accurate and authentic preservation,
function and use of a time base corrector, and a variety of other

skills related to tape duplication and preservation standards and
protocol, including new advances in the field.

Duties will include assisting shipping and receiving, labeling

preserved tapes, hard disk drives, and digital files, light clerical,
metadata and cataloging entry at clients’ request.

Following training, additional duties may include tape and DVD

duplication and quality control, archival videotape inspection and
cleaning, blacking and coding tapes.

Experience desired includes any video or audio production or
post-production, an interest in preservation or archives, particularly

video or audio preservation, library experience, education, or current
training in audiovisual archives or museum studies.

We require at least a three-month commitment, of 8-15 hours per week.

School credit may be arranged.

State of the Re:Union (SOTRU) is a dynamic NPR show that combines hour-long radio episodes with short videos, photography, music and blog posts to reach audiences online and over the airwaves. For each episode, SOTRU travels to a different American city or town to tell stories about what makes community there. Our mission is to bring American life into focus, examining the things that divide us as well as the ties that bind us together. We currently air on more than 200 stations across the U.S.

SOTRU currently has several openings for interns for our next production season, November 20 – April 15. Duties include transcribing interviews, story research, pre-interviewing, and multimedia production. Interns are invited to listen in on editorial calls with our host, editor and radio producers as we shape each episode, story by story.

To be considered for this internship, you should have a strong creative background, solid writing skills and be able to take direction. Self-starters who value attention to detail have particularly enjoyed interning with us. Audio and video editing skills are very welcome. Our staff works remotely, and you can too; people anywhere in the U.S. can apply. This internship is unpaid, and we generally ask for about 10 hours a week, sometimes more during busy

weeks.

Produced by American Documentary, POV ("point-of-view") is television's longest-running showcase for independent non-fiction film, premiering 14-16 high-impact documentaries every year on PBS. Hailed by critics as among the most important and relevant programming on television, POV films have won every coveted television and film award, including 18 Emmys, 11 George Foster Peabody Awards, eight Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Broadcast Journalism Awards, three Academy Awards, and the Prix Italia.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals who have excellent communication and writing skills and a keen attention to detail to assist in the areas of production/programming, research and development, community engagement and education, Web, and communications and marketing. Magnetic Media Preservation Internship

The Standby Program is seeking an intern to apprentice in our video and audio preservation program. Interns will gain valuable hands on experience and participate in the day-to-day workings of a magnetic media preservation facility designed specifically to address the needs of the arts and cultural community.

Standby is a non-profit media arts service organization founded 28 years ago that provides artists with access to a variety of media technology by forming partnerships with commercial post-production facilities. Standby preservation clients include:

Anthology Film Archives, Appalshop, Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), Dia Arts, Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, Experimental Television Center, Franklin Furnace, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, The Kitchen, Mix Festival NYC, Muse TV, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of the Moving Image, New York Public Library, Orphans Symposium, The Poetry Project, as well as a host of individual artists.

Intern candidates should have an interest in experimental film and video, time based art, and social issue media. Work will take place in both our Manhattan and Long Island facilities. A small stipend will be provided to offset travel expenses.

Skills acquired may include:

• Archival handling of magnetic materials

• Tape inspection and evaluation

• Operation of waveform monitors, vectorscopes and audio meters

• Operation of time base correctors and proc amps

• Equipment maintenance and repair

• Tape migration

• Metadata collection and database entry

Preferred qualifications:

• Understanding of basic audio and video production

• Familiarity with Mac based editing systems

• Knowledge of signal flow and connectors

• Experience in a library, archive, museum, post-production or media access facility

State of the Re:Union (SOTRU) is a dynamic, multi-faceted public media show that travels to different American cities to explore what makes a community, discover the people who bring it together and understand the issues they face. Combining hour-long radio episodes with documentary shorts, video podcasts, images, music and written articles, our show strives to immerse our audience in new and exciting ways. Co-distributed by PRX and NPR, our nationally-aired show is currently producing our fall season and looking for talented interns to lend a hand.

SOTRU currently has three openings for interns, and relocation is not required. Interns will mainly be responsible for transcribing audio interviews as well as other special projects that include story research, podcast production, scheduling interviews and making contacts.
