NYT Social Media Internship

The New York Times newsroom is seeking academic interns for its social media desk, which works to engage its readers on social media platforms and innovate new forms of journalism. Tasks will include: sparking conversations on The Times’s social media accounts — including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr and Instagram — as well as assisting on social journalism projects and providing general support. The intern will work closely with the social media editors and developers, as well as reporters, editors and Web producers working on social media-related projects around the newsroom.

Graduate students preferred. Selection will be competitive. The internship is unpaid. Student must receive course credit for the internship and must produce proof of such credit. This position is based in New York; the applicant must commit to being available to work at The Times headquarters at 620 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan for the spring 2012 semester, with schedules subject to restrictions and expectations set by the academic institution.

Candidates should understand the journalistic opportunities presented by social media. While you should have deep familiarity with social technologies, developer skills are not required. Experience using social networks in an editorial context or related work in a newsroom is required. You should also have an excellent eye for detail and great news instincts.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume, including links to social media accounts you maintain personally. Application deadline is Jan. 20, 2011; you must then be available for an interview to be considered further. Decisions will be made by Feb. 1.

Hey folks. NPR's State of the Re:Union is looking for interns to begin in late November – about 10 hours/week, work from anywhere. Great for students or anyone who wants to get a foot in the door with a unique, creative show. Details below, and spread the word!

Best,
Mia

++++++++++++++++++++

http://stateofthereunion.com/about-2/internships

Please pass this along to educators, students, colleagues, etc. Thank you!

State of the Re:Union (SOTRU) is a dynamic NPR show that combines hour-long radio episodes with short videos, photography, music and blog posts to reach audiences online and over the airwaves. For each episode, SOTRU travels to a different American city or town to tell stories about what makes community there. Our mission is to bring American life into focus, examining the things that divide us as well as the ties that bind us together. We currently air on more than 200 stations across the U.S.

SOTRU currently has several openings for interns for our next production season, November 20 – April 15. Duties include transcribing interviews, story research, pre-interviewing, and multimedia production. Interns are invited to listen in on editorial calls with our host, editor and radio producers as we shape each episode, story by story.

To be considered for this internship, you should have a strong creative background, solid writing skills and be able to take direction. Self-starters who value attention to detail have particularly enjoyed interning with us. Audio and video editing skills are very welcome. Our staff works remotely, and you can too; people anywhere in the U.S. can apply. This internship is unpaid, and we generally ask for about 10 hours a week, sometimes more during busy

weeks.

You can read more and listen to the show right on our website, www.stateofthereunion.com. If interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to:

Thanks for reading and spread the word!

Hey folks. I think I'm changing my policy about posting unpaid internship opportunities. For folks just starting out I can't think of any better way to get a foot in the door for future paid freelance gigs. That's how I did it. Obviously I will do my best to find paid positions, but I think it's worth putting these other options out there. This one from Newsdesk.org. Check it out!
-mia
freelancecafe.org

+++++++++++++++++++

Newsdesk.org is seeking interns to help craft its "News You Might Have Missed" editorial mission. Work opportunities include Web research, online publishing (including social media), and bylined writing.

We are based in downtown San Francisco, and are grant funded by the Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation. For more information, visit us online at: http://newsdesk.org/

Intern Tasks:

• Work with seasoned news reporters and editors, learning to use search-optimized tools such as hypertext (links), images and video to maximize exposure and reach.

• Research, write and publish articles online.

• Use social networking tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and etc., to distribute our news.

Work Requirements:

• Four hours per day, up to four days per week

• Interns will work in-office depending on computer availability. Telecommuting is also possible with check-ins via Skype, Yahoo Messenger, iChat, etc.

Coverage Areas:

Newsdesk.org covers "important but overlooked news and underserved communities," and uses a simple matrix in deciding what its news mix will be. Stories and research should fall under one or more of the following areas:

• Democracy, Economy, Environment, Nation, Public Health and World. Subcategories include water, energy, agriculture, elections, media, education, justice, arts/culture, public health, etc.

• Communities and geographic regions include, but are not limited to: China, Latin America, the Indian subcontinent, women, Africa, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, the elderly, children and artists.

Compensation:

This is an unpaid opportunity. Interns will develop online-publishing skills directly applicable to today's media-job market. We are glad to arrange for academic credit.

TO APPLY:

Send your resume and three writing samples to George Shirk, Editor, via e-mail to editor@newsdesk.org.
