Apply to FIRE

Launching Another Round
Deadline: March 23, 2017
Project Word is pleased to announce another round of applications for its signature program, Freelance Investigative Reporters and Editors (FIRE).
FIRE, a collaboration between Project Word and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), provides two basic services to unaffiliated reporters: 1) an Editorial Consultancy (formerly “Help Desk”) for an hour of reporting strategy and advice; and 2) the Virtual Newsroom, for access to a suite of newsroom reporting services.
FIRE again invites applications for both programs. This round, we will be increasing the capacity of the Virtual Newsroom by about 40%, to ten reporters. All ten will be eligible for the Newsroom’s full complement of reporting services—from research assistance to pro bono legal help; five of them will receive stipends of $2,500 to $5,000. The capacity of Editorial Consultancies will expand as well, to 25 reporters.

This new round of applications builds on the success of our 2016 pilot project. In January, we canvassed the 30 participants in the pilot project. Approximately 60% of them were able to complete an online questionnaire and follow-up interview with a Project Word researcher. As expected, both beginning and experienced journalists reported benefiting from FIRE. The upshot was highly positive, as indicated by some heartening testimonials

The feedback has already informed FIRE’s operations and applications process, which we are always seeking to make more efficient and freelancer-friendly. We are grateful for the feedback.

To apply to FIRE, reporters are encouraged to visit the program's Guidelines page.  Application deadline is March 23, 2017. (Those who previously applied to FIRE are invited to reapply.)

Please circulate this notice widely.

I look forward to hearing from you.

In solidarity,

Laird Townsend,
for FIRE

Join KALW's Audio Academy

KALW is calling for applicants for our nine-month radio journalism training program based at KALW public radio, an NPR and BBC affiliate station in San Francisco. This program is designed to give you a professional audio production and journalism education, tuition-free.

We’re looking for creative thinkers who are great writers and storytellers with a passion for covering diverse communities and some knowledge of the Bay Area. Some experience with audio production and/or journalism is preferred.

Audio Academy participants will be trained to produce feature reports for KALW’s award-winning daily news program Crosscurrents. Your voice and your work will be broadcast on KALW during your time in the Audio Academy.

Training will include:

Working closely with reporters on developing stories, reporting and producing original feature stories for broadcast, interviewing potential guests/sources, researching topics, fact-checking, script writing, recording sound for pieces in the field, and learning story structure, voicing, digital production, engineering, and sound design.

You will be responsible for helping with administrative and production duties. You will also have the opportunity to pitch, report, and produce an entire Crosscurrents episode. The training will take place inside the collaborative and supportive community of the KALW newsroom. Our editors and engineers, along with other public media producers, will lead training workshops specifically for the Audio Academy.

Previous featured speakers have included: Al Letson, Glynn Washington, Roman Mars, Hansi Lo Wang, Susanne Reber, Daniel Alarcón, Marianne McCune, Jason DeRose, and Kelly McEvers.

If you’re selected, you’ll be expected to make a nine-month commitment from late August 2017 to early June 2018: minimum 20 hours per week (one eight-hour shift at our studios and another 12 hours working in the field). The Academy includes a two-week break in late December and two flexible vacation weeks for each participant. Enrollment in a college or university is not necessary to participate.

How to apply

To apply please put together a cover letter, CV, any audio/writing samples, and if you like, a short, original, audio work that you craft for your application. Send it all to KALWapplications@gmail.com. Please include the subject line Audio Academy 2017-2018.
